OPAL Play at St Augustine’s

At St Augustine’s, we recognise that play is an essential part of childhood – a time when pupils learn, explore, create, and grow. Through our involvement in the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, we are committed to making playtimes more engaging, inclusive, and meaningful for every child.

What is OPAL?

OPAL is a nationally recognised programme that helps schools develop high-quality play opportunities. It encourages children to be imaginative, adventurous, and active, supporting their physical health, emotional wellbeing, and social development.

Why OPAL?

Play is more than just fun – it builds confidence, collaboration, problem-solving skills, and resilience. At St Augustine’s, we believe play is a vital part of learning and of our broader commitment to nurturing the whole child.

What Does OPAL Look Like at St Augustine’s?

  • Loose parts such as tyres, crates, and fabric for open-ended play
  • Mud kitchens, sand pits, and water play areas
  • Construction zones and den-building spaces
  • Opportunities for climbing, digging, and nature exploration
  • Quiet zones for drawing, reading, and reflective play

Our Vision

Inspired by our mission to help every child flourish, we want all pupils at St Augustine’s to enjoy joyful, purposeful play every day. OPAL supports our belief that outdoor play is not a break from learning – it is a vital and enriching part of school life.

OPAL PLAY

It has long been recognised that play is fundamental to a child’s health, happiness, development and wellbeing. Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child states: Every child has the right to rest, relax, play and to take part in cultural and creative activities. Play is how young children learn to navigate the world, and build narratives, knowledge and social skills. Play is essential business for children.

Research has also shown that children spend 20% of their time in primary school playing. One fifth of their total time in school MUST be viewed as important enough to take seriously and develop just as well as we do for subjects like English and Maths. In 2024 we started our OPAL development journey. For us at St. Augustine’s Primary, this is a long-term commitment to prioritising learning through play.

Over time, we are committed to developing our grounds at St. Augustine’s to meet the needs of all of the many different play types that children have:
